Six Unimportant Things That Make Me Happy

My pal Shannon tagged me on this survey. I'm not exactly sure what things would be classified as "unimportant", but here goes.

1.  Coffee, most certainly. Without it life is not worth living.

2.  Planning something, anything, with my husband. That's when I feel most in sync with him.

3.  Getting comments on my blog. I get such a rush out of that, I don't know why! Maybe it's because you make me feel like you like me .. you really like me!

4.  Having all of my kids to bed by 9:00 p.m., not to be seen again until morning!

5.  Watching t.v. with no talking.  I'm one of those who likes to hear every single word of a show, even if it's insignificant chatter.  Who knows, it could be that one important piece to the plot!

6.  Uninterrupted naps.  Oh how I miss those!

I am tagging the following six people. So, you must do this!
1.  Steph
2.  Loren
3.  Jen
4.  April
6.  Tamara

When you do it, mention my blog, post your six things and tag six people.

Another Whirlwind Weekend!

We made another quick trip to Kansas City this weekend. We found a listing for a historic home built in 1880 in the city we are desiring. It's well within our price range, on an acre lot in town, close to the square and just downright amazing! It has 4 bedrooms, a huge laundry room, a huge updated kitchen, two living areas (one of which we are thinking would be an amazing master suite making the home 5 bedrooms), an office, a dining room, 2 1/2 baths, a coffee porch, a garden shed, a greenhouse, gardening boxes, huge huge huge oak trees, a koi pond, wraparound porch, landscaping galore, an arbor covered in rose bushes, and to top it off a wooden swing hung from one of the oak trees. Can I just say, "WOW!" It was even more amazing in person than we saw in the pictures.

Our realtor really thought we should make another trip up to see it. We left Saturday morning and drove straight there with three of the kids. We checked into our hotel room and then went to view the house. Because we loved it so much we met with the realtor and made an offer, contingent on the sale of our home. We haven't heard back yet about our offer.

We took the kids out to eat and then my sister (who lives 10 minutes from there) met up with us at the hotel and watched the kiddos swim while Rick and I wrote up the offer.

We stayed the night at the hotel, swam a little more this morning, and then headed back home.

We are wiped out!

Kyndal leaves for church camp tomorrow morning. We have a Broker's Open House at our home on Tuesday. I have my rescheduled surgery on Wednesday morning. Whew! Life around here is CRAZY!

But you know what, we have so much living we are doing right where we are at! I told Rick that I want to make sure that we are living life to the fullest here, rather than concentrating on selling our house so we can move on!

Yes, that house is so awesome! We love the town! We love the neighborhood! We want to move soon! But, God has a plan for us that may or may not include living in that house. I want God's best for us, for me, whatever that is!

Oh, and just a note ... I just noticed that I have now been blogging for a full year! I started on June 2, 2008. Wow!

My Girl

Last weekend while we were in Missouri, we noticed a field of wildflowers down the highway from my parents' house. We decided to stop and take pictures of our aspiring model. We could have taken pictures forever, had it not been for the approaching dogs who were one property over.

~ I love to photograph her ~

Take time this weekend to stop and smell the flowers!

We're headed back to Liberty tomorrow to look at a cool Colonial house built in 1880 that we want to buy. This trip we're just driving straight there tomorrow with three of the four kiddos, staying in a hotel with a pool, and coming home on Sunday.

Am I at a Spa? ~ The Finished Product

The floors in our master bathroom are done, and I must give myself a pat on the back! They turned out beautiful!

Here are some pics ~

$65 Flooring

When we moved into our house a year and a half ago, our master bath floor was not finished. Rick and I had stained the concrete in most of the lower level of our house, and had the same intent with the bathroom. When we were moving in, however, there was still work being done on the house so our tile guy was in the bathroom. We thought, "We'll stain this floor soon." Well, soon came and went. Rick did, at one point, decide to stain it. But the stain had collected condensation and he didn't have enough. So he did what he could do, but then the stain wouldn't dry right. For about a year we had newspapers on the floor just to keep our feet from getting stained. We couldn't decide if we were going to buy more stain to finish it, have it tiled, or what.

Well, the "what" is what we decided on, or at least it was what I decided on. I decided I wanted to paint the concrete and then do a faux finish over it.

Since my surgery got postponed until next Friday, I thought, "I'm going to take advantage of this time. Everything happens for a reason, so there's a reason why my surgery has been put off for a week and a half." The floor was something I really wanted to have done before our Brokers' Open House that we are having on Tuesday. If I would have had my surgery yesterday as planned, I wouldn't have had the physical ability to do the floor. On that note, I wouldn't have been able to have cleaned the house the way it needs to be cleaned either. So, I embraced the extra time I was given and got started on the floors yesterday at about noon.

I had bought all of the supplies, including brushes, rollers, tape, etc., for $65 total! That was for TSP cleaner, primer, paint, stain and lacquer.

Here's the before picture

First I cleaned the floor with TSP. (And no I wasn't afraid of catching the swine flu .. I was just trying to protect myself from the fumes!)

Second, I taped off all of the woodwork.

Third, I painted the floor with a basic interior primer. (I could have done a second coat, but decided it was a waste of time since I was going for a swirly look anyway.)

Fourth, I put on two coats of a light goldish floor paint.

Fifth, I took a wood stain and worked in sections. I would brush the stain on, then wipe it in a swirly motion with a rag.

Then I waited for it to dry ...
... and waited
... and waited
... and waited
(have I told you how impatient I am and hate to wait??)

And then let it sit overnight.

But, it was still tacky/sticky even this morning! Gads!

I was a little stressed. I had intended on using a glaze over it, but couldn't find what I needed in the time I was shopping for it. Apparently wood stain does not completely dry on painted concrete.  Ooooooops!

So, I decided to test an area and apply the lacquer on top of it to see what would happen. Well, it hardened right up .. tackiness/stickiness gone!

The only problem with this is that I am having to do reachable sections, then wait 30 minutes before it's safe to put paper down on it to move to the next section. This will take me all day. But, it's working. And, it looks so cool!!!

** A tip about putting the lacquer over the stain. When you brush it on, be careful not to push too hard on the paintbrush because it will dig into the stain and leave brush marks. Take your time and do smooth, easy strokes.

We could have purchased more concrete stain for over $100. Or we could have spent a few hundred dollars to tile the floor. Instead, I spent a total of $65 to give it the exact look I had envisioned! And I felt pretty good about the fact that I had created it myself and had been frugal in the process!

I've got the complete first coat of lacquer on now. It looks great and seems solid! I'm going to wait two hours and then put one more coat of lacquer on the whole thing. Then I'll take off the tape. I'll post the full "after" photo once the tape is pulled and the bathroom is put back together.

Causing Quite a Stir

You know, I went back and forth whether to share my plans to have cosmetic surgery. I was worried about the negative comments (turns out I should have been). But I decided that anybody who knows me personally is going to know, so why shouldn't those who follow my blog.

I tell my family all the time that when reading my blog you have to take the good with the bad. Some days I'm up, some days I'm down. Some days I'm joyful, some days I'm angry! Some days things go well, some days things don't. But you will always get the real me when you read my blog. And that's the great thing about blogging .. it's a place for me to journal and inform my friends and family about what we're doing, but you don't have to read it!

If you think I'm perfect, then exit out of this blog now. I am a flawed woman just like you are! I have some awesome qualities! But sometimes my evil twin Nellie comes out to play. Either way I do no one any good, including myself or my family, by pretending to be someone I am not. Even those qualities you see in me that are negative are forming me into the woman God has intended for me to be.

I've had two negative comments to my Simple Woman's Daybook that mentioned my breast augmentation. Ironically, the first was from an Anonymous so I couldn't respond to him or her directly. The other was from Lori who has a private blog, so I couldn't respond to her either. That really irritates me! If you want to comment negatively about something I am doing, at least have the courage to let me know who you are!

I do want to say, I have never considered myself as a Simple Woman, as apparently falling under the definition of what was intended on The Simple Woman's Daybook. In fact I read many, many, many of the Daybook entries and think, "They are just not like me. And I don't want to be like them." But I thoroughly enjoy participating in it because it gives me a specific thing to journal about every week and it's fun to go back and read them. I have also met a couple of, what I now consider, my closest and dearest friends through the Daybook. (Oh, and none of them have given me any flack about this decision.) I have aspirations to live a simpler life, on some levels. But I happen to like my life. My husband loves me and my children adore me. I love God, I love my family, I love my home, I love my friends. I'd like to slow down in some areas and enjoy life more. And I'm all done with living my life the way others think I should! Done with that, friends!

My husband and I receive counseling from a Life Coach, not because we are on divorce's door, but because we need help in weathering the storms of life. It's awesome and our family has never been stronger! One thing she always says, and I would love to share it with Anonymous and Lori, is ~ If one of your buttons is being pushed by my getting breast implants, then it's an issue with you, not me. You have a demon you need to conquer, or at least explore. You have all control over your own feelings and emotions, so if you are feeling peeved at me it's only because I have struck a cord in something negative in your life. You are angry about something in your own life and it has nothing to do with me. I pray that you can heal that wound, whatever it is, so you can feel freedom.

I'm sure one of the arguments toward me is, "If you love God so much shouldn't you be happy with the body He gave you?" Sure I should be, but I'm not! And you should be content not to judge other people, but you do!

I think of it like this ... What if I bought my oldest daughter a "good reliable car" when she turned 16. Let's say I sacrificed much to get her the car. In my opinion, it was exactly what she needed. It wasn't pretty, or shiny. In fact it was a sedan missing a front bumper. But, she happily drove the car for three years, although she really wanted a nicer one. Then when she graduated from high school, and had a job, she traded in the old car and bought a shiny red sports car. Perhaps she had to take money out of savings. Let's say I thought it was a frivolous waste of money because she has a perfectly good car! But, she wanted a new one and she was responsible enough to save her money to buy it. If she didn't go into debt, or shirk any of her responsibilities or take away from someone else, then it's her business. I can be disappointed in it, but do I love her any less? No! And does she love me any less because she has a new car? No!

I feel the same way about God and an enhancement to the body he gave me. God created plastic surgeons and desires for His children to do everything in moderation. I'm not getting a facelift, eyebrow lift, tummy tuck, botox, eyelash implants and butt implants at the same time. I have no desire to change any of those things in me, even though not one of those body parts of mine is flawless.

Now, Anonymous and Lori, I have a question for you ... Have you ever dieted? Have you ever exercised? Why do you do those things? Aren't you happy with the body God gave you?

The two things that make me the maddest are the attacks on my relationship with the Lord and my lack of frugality. God and I have never been closer. We've had circumstances in my life over the past two months that have brought us closer together than we have ever been. How close are you to God? And as far as my frugality? My blog is not one dedicated to being frugal. Sometimes I like to share my frugal ways. But the blog is all-inclusive. I have never complained about having to be frugal. I don't have to be. We make enough money that I don't have to be frugal. But I enjoy being frugal! It's a game .. a rush .. when I save money! And I want to be a good steward of the money God has blessed us with. I do it because I want to, not because I have to! Perhaps you two ladies have to be frugal in order to survive, so you are angry with me that I don't. Who knows.

But let me tell you something .. my husband and I live on a budget we have created for ourselves because it is the right thing to do. We drive older paid-off cars. We rarely go out to eat. We save money to do the things we enjoy doing. We love to vacation, at least once a year. We love to spend money on things we want. But, we always do it wisely. We are tithers, gave more to missions last year than a lot of people make in a year. We give away things of ours that will benefit someone else, even our only umbrella on a rainy day, or $10 in gas to a total stranger at Quik Trip. We sponsor children in need, give to charitable organizations. We feel that if we can afford breast augmentation then we can afford to order two magazines from the poor dude who rang our doorbell the other night. (If we never get the magazines, so what. The guys obviously needed help, so we helped him.) We are giving and good people, and I totally did not need to justify any of this. But I wanted those of you who don't know us to get a feel for the type of people we are.

And as far as being frugal for these new breasts?  I've waited 19 years to do it. Talk about delayed gratification! I have wanted to do it since I was 19 years old, but have made sure all necessary things were taken care of (like my children and their needs) before I even considered it. We shopped around and got a good deal with a reputable surgeon. We paid cash for it.

So, there you have it. Again, I don't feel like I need to justify my decisions to anyone. But I am hoping that by sharing my viewpoint I can help Anonymous and Lori, and anyone else who feels the need to judge me, to conquer their own anger over an area that has nothing to do with me. I hope you can feel freedom from the bondage you are under. I hope that you can live a life with as much joy as I have.

Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today  ~  June 2, 2009

Outside my window... it's another cloudy Tuesday. We are supposed to get some rain today.

I am thinking... I have a lot to do today and I don't want to waste my morning on the computer.

I am thankful for... the stability that Rick and I provide for our children.

From the learning rooms... huh? It's SUMMER! It's all about fun now!

From the kitchen... I'm fixing some meals for later in the week when I'll be recovering from surgery.

I am wearing... my leopard and rose pjs and bare feet.

I am creating... an organized home in preparation of the next three weeks where I won't be able to do much housework.

I am praying ... for my mother-in-law's continued strength during her chemo and that she doesn't have the 7-10 day crash others have prepared her for; that our house sells fast because we found an 1800's Colonial home that we really, really want!

I am going... to go get my teeth cleaned this morning, go to the tanning salon, get the house cleaned and organized and meals in order.

I am reading... 1 Samuel and the book of Psalms.

I am hoping... God moves swiftly in the sale of our house and provides Rick with a job that provides him with a good income and fulfillment.

I am hearing... Finding Nemo on Brynne's t.v. and Eli stomping around upstairs chasing our cat.

Around the house... mulch needs to be spread.

One of my favorite things... has become taking care of my flowers and vegetables.

A few plans for the rest of the week... Today I am doing what I stated above, and trying to get the mulch spread on the hill. Tomorrow I am having some plastic surgery, so the rest of the week I will be bedridden and in a drug-induced sleep (I hope!).  Rick and Kyndal will be caring for me.  Dawson's at his dad's for the next two weeks, so it will certainly be quiet around here.  Kyndal will be babysitting our neighbor's kids.  I am hoping I will be recovered enough to go out for a while on Saturday night to meet up with a group of Rick's high school friends.

Here is a picture thought I am sharing...

My boys are a couple of gamers. I found them sitting on Dawson's top bunk last week with their handheld games racing on Mario Kart.  They are 7 years apart in age, but very compatible when it comes to this.
